If your child is passionate about writing, then
YOUNG WRITER'S WORKSHOP is a perfect place to continue to develop and feed that creativity!
WHAT WE DO:
We use fun exercises to teach your child how to write short stories. We learn about the elements of a story, characters, dialogue, and settings. We also dive into how to hook a reader, create story arcs and show versus tell, and much more!
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
The workshop is an after school program at Bradford K-8 South campus for grades 2-4 and at the North campus for 5th graders. Homeschool families in the area are also welcome! This workshop is for students interested in learning how to write stories, not necessarily for children struggling with writing, although the additional exposure creates a positive learning experience and hopefully a greater interest in writing. That being said, we focus on the creative process and do much more than just write. The goal is for each child to write a story (and illustrate it, if they wish!).
The experience I bring to the (writing) table...
When I was six years old, I received a pink diary with a fancy little lock on it. My first entry was about catching ladybugs and how many I collected. I’ve been writing ever since.
I was an elementary school teacher, went on to receive my M.S. Ed in Instructional Technology, and wrote online training material for higher education and the health & safety markets. Now, I write poems, picture books, and middle-grade novels!
I belong to the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI (Rocky Mountain Chapter) where I attend amazing workshops and conferences to learn how to become a better writer. I am a FINALIST PRIZE winner for the Astra International Picture Book Writing Contest for my story, Waiting for Kai. And the same picture book manuscript was a finalist for the Golden Pen Award through the RMC-SCBWI Conference in 2017. I received an honorable mention for Let's Take a Walk and The Very Haunted House through various online writing contests. I received a top rating of "1" for Charlie and Sawyer Go Camping and In Trees, Tall and Green through Rate Your Story. My writer’s critique group, lovingly named Picture Book Junkies (PBJs) and the 12×12 Writing Challenge keep me writing just about every day!
When I’m not writing books, I’m busy with my husband and three kids either hiking, playing tennis, traveling, listening to music, reading, or doing dishes(!).

"My daughter loved Young Writer's Workshop! I noticed a difference in her creative writing right away. She has started writing stories on her own in her free time which is something she wasn't doing before. This is a great after-school activity that she looked forward to every time. It has really made a difference in her writing!" -Mother of a 2nd grader
"I liked getting help to make my story even better."
